Into the Deep: Why Navy is the New Neutral

Navy is a classic color! We have such affinity for this color that we selected to be our logo color. To us, navy is the ultimate sophisticated statement. The color itself dates back to the British Royal Navy where this dark shade of blue was used for their uniforms. Over time this color gained popularity in art, fashion, and design. Navy became the ultimate color representing authority, elegance, and sophistication. It’s enduring appeal continues to this day. As with most colors, they go through cycles of being in and then out. And navy is definitely having an “in” moment at this time and we are all about it. It was all over the runway shows from Victoria Beckham to Miu Miu to Proenza Schouler. Vogue is calling it the new black. Navy is a must-have color for your wardrobe but it is also a favorite of ours to incorporate in interior spaces!

Elevate Your Space with this Classic Hue

We consider navy a neutral so incorporating it in your space is an easy decision. There are various ways you can make a stylish statement using this hue and since it is a versatile color, it can be integrated into most spaces in several ways. We have rounded up a list of ways to get the hue into your home, whether go bold or subtle, there’s options for everything.

Wallpaper

Wallpaper is one dramatic way to bring the navy into your house and there are endless options to choose from! If you want to go moody and saturated, you can go with a solid option. We love the idea of a textured option. Texture adds another level of interest to a space to avoid it from falling flat. Some of our favorite solid options are a grass cloth or a shagreen. Do you want to go a little bolder with pattern? We fully embrace that as well! When it comes to patterned options, there are organic, floral motifs or geometric and global options that we are really into. Then do not forget the power that a classic stripe commands in a space.

Tile

Love the color and ready to commit? There are so many pretty navy tiles that can really make a statement in your bathroom or kitchen. The fish scale or fan shape is soft and fun. The chevron is classic yet modern. And last but not least, there’s a classic subway that can be laid horizontally or vertically. Take a look at some of these inspiration images below:

In this moody powder bathroom, we selected these 4×4 square tiles to run wall to wall and then continued the deep hue onto the surrounding walls in a similar color. The result is a cozy powder bath that will delight every guest. To see more of this project, click here!

Lighting

Another great way to bring in the color in smaller doses is through lighting. There are a number of different ways that you can do this for relatively little effort. One of the easiest ways is through accent lighting. Table lamps are a great option that can that subtly introduce the color into your space. They come in a variety of styles and price points so there are options to fit all budgets. If you have a neutral lamp base like in white, you could also consider switching out the lamp shade to navy blue hue. This works well in living rooms or bedrooms, adding a touch of elegance without overwhelming the space. Another way is through pendant lighting. Opt for navy blue pendant lights to create a focal point in areas like the kitchen or dining room. They provide both functional lighting and a stylish statement. Navy blue wall sconces can provide ambient lighting while enhancing the room’s color palette. They are ideal for hallways, reading nooks, or bathrooms.

Furniture & Accessories

One of our favorite ways to incorporate any color is through furniture and home accessories. This sentiment definitely applies to navy! As we have stated, this sophisticated color is easy to layer in through chairs, fabric and pillows. We love navy on furniture. PERIOD. Wether it’s a custom built-in that we have designed or a free-standing piece, this hue is magic in a space. We are really into these textured nightstands and credenzas. It’s the best of both worlds-texture and color! A mirror is an easy accessory that can easily change the overall feel of a space. It’s not an in-your-face color but rather an elegant change to a standard black framed mirror.

We know that this color will remain classically timeless and we will continue to use it in our projects. As an extension to this point, we will be working on a post of our favorite blue paint colors so stay tuned!
